What does Hosting involve?

As a host, you determine a location for 8-12 of your friends, family members, neighbors or colleagues to meet for a mealtime conversation at a time of your choice during the week of October 1-8, 2019. The meal will bring people together to discuss the ways in which we can collaborate to make our communities stronger, connected, and more dynamic – communities where opportunities grow, quality of life is enhanced, and residents thrive. You can prepare a meal, have it catered, order take out or delivery, or have guests bring items to share potluck style. These are just a few options; there is no right or wrong way.

When do I hold my event?

During the week of October 1-8th, 2019 during breakfast, lunch or dinner! Please choose a day and mealtime during this week that works well for you and for your invited guests.

How do I get started?

The first step is to fill out the table registration form. Once you have registered our table(s), you will receive email updates from us that will provide you with next steps. Please save the date for our Host Orientation & Celebration event, to be held from 4-6pm on October 2, 2018 at the South Hills Country Club. Who do I invite?

Start with people you know – friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. You may consider inviting four or five friends and asking each of them to bring a friend! Eight to 12 guests per table is ideal. Around the Table South is about giving everyone a chance to speak and be heard.

What will I be asked to do as a Host?

  • Introduce Around the Table South and explain the purpose of it to your guests – our host toolkit will provide you with additional details on how to do this! Host Toolkits will be provided at our October 2nd Host Orientation & Celebration Event, which will be held from 4-6pm at South Hills Country Club. Record the names and emails for each guest to provide to us after the event.
  • Take notes (or assign one of your guests to be note taker) to record themes from your Conversation. We will provide you with a note taking template.
  • Ask your Guests to complete the Survey that we will provide to you in both digital and printed formats. This is a crucial part of Around the Table. The Survey allows us to collect the creative ideas and actionable plans discussed during the event. Results from these Conversations will be published in an Around the Table South Report to the community in early 2020.

Why should I participate?

By hosting or joining a mealtime conversation as part of Around the Table South, you’ll be part of an exciting, community-wide initiative to explore the ways in which we have the power to collaborate to make our communities stronger, connected and more dynamic. We believe that sharing stories, experiences and hopes for the future will help us develop a deeper understanding of our communities and each other. Results from the conversations will be collected, compiled and shared with the community. In addition to sharing results in an Around the Table South Report, Jefferson Regional Foundation will outline Ideas from the Table Mini-Grant opportunities to encourage community action.

Can I host multiple tables?

Yes, that makes you a “Superhost!” If you would like to be a Superhost, please note that you will need to ensure that each of your tables has its own Host. You may register all tables at once through our online table registration form. Everyone who plans to serve as a Host for your tables should attend our October 2nd Host Orientation Event, which will be held from 4-6pm at South Hills Country Club.

If I participate in multiple tables, how many surveys do I fill out?

We kindly request that you fill out a separate survey for each table conversation that you Host or attend. Every conversation will be different and we want to capture the experience you have at each. Thus, if you are hosting two separate table conversations, you will fill out our Host Survey twice, once for each table. If you are serving as a Host at one table and a Guest at another, you will fill out our Host Survey once and our Guest Survey once. Our online survey has been set up to allow you to submit multiple survey responses. We ask that only one Host fill out a Host Survey for each Table. Thus, if you have co-Hosts who are part of the same Table discussion, please have one Host complete a Host Survey and the other Host complete a Guest Survey. How long should my conversation be?

We recommend holding your conversation for at least 90 minutes. This allows time for your Guests to introduce themselves, enjoy the meal, have a deep conversation, and complete their Guest Surveys before they leave.
